Check Out the Exceptional Choreographers Nominated for This Year’s Emmys
It’s a big week in the world of television as the nominees for the 74 annual Emmys were recently announced. The ceremony awards excellence in the television industry from exceptional costuming, lighting, acting, producing, and choreography. From fashion shows to the ballroom, check out the fantastic nominees in the Outstanding Choreography for Variety or Reality TV Programming.
Three-time Emmy winner Derek Hough is up for another award, alongside Tessandra Chavez, for their work in the ABC pre-Oscar special Step Into… The Movies with Derek and Julianne Hough. In this piece, Hough and his dancers reimagine Moulin Rouge’s “Roxanne” with a powerful Argentine Tango. They utilize Amber Riley’s vocals to reexplore the scene based on their interpretations, as per director Baz Luhrmann’s suggestion. While Hough is no stranger to the Emmys roster, this is the first time the academy nominates him for a project in which he is an executive producer.
The NBC special Annie Live! highlighted superstars like Taraji P. Henson and Nicole Scherzinger; however, you can not deny the talent of the young ensemble cast. They supported the main cast with their strong performance skills. The Emmys nominated choreographer Sergio Trujillo for his pieces “NYC,” “We Got Annie,” and the classic number “Hard Knock Life.”
In September, Savage X Fenty debuted their highly-anticipated third annual Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 3 fashion show. The show featured its new collection through high-level lighting, film concepts, extraordinary scenery, and astounding choreography. Parris Goebel had the task of choreographing an exceptional opening to set the tone for the show; she did just that. Accompanied by Jade Novah, the dancers created shapes and images with their movement that looks like it belongs in a museum.
When Beyoncé opened the 2022 Oscars with “Be Alive,” we knew it was a standout piece. Choreographer Fatima Robinson put together a visually pleasing and technically stunning number that once again set the bar high. Robinson explained her performance as two perfectionist Virgos working together to make magic happen. Truly, perfection is an understatement.
Rounding out the list of nominees is Dancing With the Stars pro and reigning champion Daniella Karagach. Karagach partnered with NBA player Iman Shumpert this season, and together they defied gravity and left the audience speechless. The academy nominated Karagach for their jaw-dropping Horror Night contemporary piece “I Got 5,” which became an instant hit, reaching millions of views within a week and got the attention of stars like Lupita Nyongo. The two-time pro is also nominated for their semi-finals jazz number “Dark Fantasy,” which ended with Karagach standing on Shumpert’s pecs; yes, you read that right.
As always, this category is bursting at the seams with talent, and it will be an extremely tight race to see who will take home the Emmy. The Creative Arts Emmys will take place on September 3 and 4, and the 74 Primetime Emmy Awards will air on September 12 on NBC.
