Amy Adams Turns Wicked in New Film Disenchanted
From the Enchanted fairy tale of the first film, Disenchanted leaves us wondering how the lovable sweet Giselle (Amy Adams) becomes tempted by the dark side.
Amy Adams is the first real-life Disney princess to walk out of a 2D animated fairy tale. In Enchanted we see Giselle enter a world that contrasts her fairytale romantic spectacle: Manhattan, New York City. The city becomes her new reality as she lives happily ever after with her new family. Or so it seems.
According to Variety, the sequel film takes place 15 years after we last saw Giselle and Robert live happily ever after along with her stepdaughter, Morgan. Upon returning to the movie, Patrick Dempsey reveals “to work with everybody again after 14 years is just really exciting.” Idina Menzel (Frozen) returns to the motion picture as princess Nancy Tremaine and James Marsden as Prince Edward.
The trailer opens with a wide shot of New York City and Amy Adams’ melodic voice she used in Enchanted. It’s a definite call back that leaves viewers brimming with nostalgia at hearing Adams’ vocals.
Giselle seems to have become more used to city life with her husband, stepdaughter, and newborn child. However, a rift develops between Giselle and Morgan when news of moving away to the suburbs comes to light.

While it seems as though our bubbly protagonist is ever optimistic, she reveals that she is still becoming accustomed to the reality she now lives in. She tells Nancy that “In Andalasia the hardest part is finding your happily ever after, this world is very different.” In the next scene of the trailer, Prince Edward discloses that “if this world is not to your liking then you must change it,” hinting at Giselle possibly altering her reality to fit the fairy tale life she always wanted. This is further proved by Giselle whispering to a magic wand repeatedly “I wish.”
The previous film is no stranger to referencing its Disney princess tropes: breaking into song, communicating with animals, and true love’s first kiss.
It seems as though Giselle may be fulfilling the role of the evil stepmother, a trope that has been used in classic Disney films from Snow White (1937) to Cinderella (1950). We see Giselle lock Morgan in a room while she cries out “Stepmother!” reminiscent of the Cinderella scene, where the protagonist is also locked in a room by her stepmother. In another scene, Giselle pushes Morgan into a well, filled with thick sprouting vines, similar to how Giselle was pushed into a waterfall abyss in the first film.
Havoc ensues as the trailer cuts to snippets of chaos Giselle seems to be creating with her newfound magic.
Fans are excited to see this new maleficent side of our benevolent character.
The way I’m so excited for Disenchanted, the whole Giselle becoming evil cuz she’s a stepmother that wished for a fairytale life is beyond genius to me.

Although there is a new twist to this cinematic fairy tale, it will have just as much singing and dancing as Enchanted had with an addition of new characters. Maya Rudolph (The Good Place) will be playing the movie’s new big bad Malvina Monroe and Yvette Nicole Brown (Community) as Rosaleen.
More surprises are to come with the new anticipated sequel as fans dissect and prod at the trailer for hints of plot points that might occur. Here at Glitter, we are excited to see the enchanting film, Disenchanted, which will stream on November 24 on Disney +. Fans can take a look at the spellbinding trailer down below.
