The female-led untitled Pirates of the Caribbean spin-off starring Margot Robbie has officially been killed.

Robbie broke the news of the cancellation in her new interview with Vanity Fair, where the Oscar nominee will be featured on the December/January cover of the publication.

In the interview with Vanity Fair about her future projects, Robbie discussed how the Pirates spinoff was supposed to center on being female-led. She stated, “We had an idea, and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool.” However, Disney seemed to discard the project. The actress confirmed the network’s choice, explaining, “but I guess they don’t want to do it.”

The Hollywood Reporter announced the spinoff in June 2020, but not many details of the project were released. Margot Robbie was set to star with her Birds of Prey partner, Christina Hodson writing the script. Jerry Bruckheimer, who has previously worked in the franchise, was also set to produce. A title or release date was never announced.

Although Robbie’s Pirates spinoff will not make it to the big screen, there are plenty of upcoming projects for the actress. Robbie’s interview with Vanity Fair focused on her upcoming film, Babylondirected by Damien Chazelle. The drama, set in 1920s Hollywood, premieres on December 23.

Notably, Robbie will also be starring with Ryan Gosling in the new Barbie film, debuting in 2023. In addition, Robbie will produce the film, with Greta Gerwig directing. The film follows Barbie as she ventures off into the human world. Photos from the set leaked recently, revealing the first look at Robbie and Gosling as Barbie and Ken. The release date for Barbie is officially listed as July 21, 2023. Tickets are not yet on sale.
