Louis Vuitton appoints musician and style icon, Pharrell Williams, to lead their menswear designs following Virgil Abloh’s passing.

Following the death of the late Virgil Abloh in November 2021, Louis Vuitton has been searching for a new creative director for their menswear collections. The fashion house has seemingly now found Abloh’s successor in Williams. Louis Vuitton made this announcement official on their Instagram this past February 14.

Louis Vuitton explains, “Williams is a visionary whose creative universes expand from music to art, and to fashion- establishing himself as a global cultural icon over the past twenty years.”

The announcement came with many congratulations for Williams.

The Grammy award-winning artist is no stranger to the fashion world. Williams is a fashion icon for turning out show-stopping looks, which often combine streetwear and high fashion aesthetics. In 2015, the Council of Fashion Designers of America honored him with their Fashion Icon award.

The multi-talented artist has collaborated with Louis Vuitton twice in the past. First, in 2004, he collaborated with Louis Vuitton and Japanese brand Nigo to make sunglasses, dubbing the collection “Millionaire.” The collection proved to be successful and only grew in popularity after its initial release. In 2018, Abloh redesigned the sunglasses for Louis Vuitton’s spring 2019 menswear collection. Then, in 2008, Williams returned to work with Louis Vuitton on their Blason jewelry collection, which included diamond rings and bracelets.

In 2003, Williams worked with Nigo to create the streetwear fashion brand “Billionaire Boys Club.” The company is still going strong today, with Williams serving as a chief executive officer. It has even expanded into sub-labels which include Billionaire Girls Club, Bee Line, and Ice Cream footwear.

Williams’s other fashion ventures include a sunglass collection with Moncler in 2013, a long-term partnership with Adidas that began in 2014, and a $1000 sneaker in collaboration with Adidas and Chanel that came out in 2017.

William’s first collection for Louis Vuitton will be shown next June during Men’s Fashion Week in Paris. While we can not be entirely sure what to expect, given that it will be his first collection, we can not wait to see what he will turn out. For more exciting fashion news, you can click here.
