Following the June release of her sixth studio album, Big Time, Angel Olsen announced her EP, Forever Means. The first track features a stunning horn arrangement by Dan Higgins and organ and piano work by Drew Erickson.

Forever Means will consist of tracks “Nothing’s Free,” “Forever Means,” “Time Bandits,” and “Holding On.”

Olsen revealed more about the track, stating, “‘Nothing’s Free’ is a song about that point when self-denial breaks and you notice how long you’ve been restraining who you are.”

The singer also admitted that it was hard to keep “Nothing’s Free” off her last album, but given the song’s new direction, she knew that she was making the right decision. She continues, “It felt more soulful than the direction of that record, it was coming from a different place. For me, when I wrote it, I was coming to terms with my identity and sexuality. I was opening up in a new way.”

Her last record, Big Time, found the singer coping with several difficult life events. Olsen was learning to understand herself as a queer woman while simultaneously experiencing the unimaginable grief of losing both of her parents.

The making of the record was a fundamental part of her healing process. She states, “This experience has brought a lot of sadness and the weight of life crashing down on me, but I think talking about it has helped me sharpen how I feel about it, and sharing that with people who are currently experiencing the weirdness of that during a pandemic makes me feel less alone. By putting anything out, I just hope that it reaches someone, and it’s not just me stroking my ego.”

Angel Olsen’s EP, Forever Means, will be released on April 14 via Jagjaguwar Records. The lyric video to “Nothing’s Free” is available to watch below.
