Will Sharpe to Direct Michelle Zauner’s Crying in H Mart Film Adaptation
Japanese Breakfast’s front woman, Michelle Zauner, has chosen Will Sharpe who is best known for HBO’s The White Lotus, to direct the film adaptation of her memoir Crying in H Mart.
Back when Zauner released her third studio album, Jubilee, the “Be Sweet” hitmaker revealed that her memoir, Crying In H Mart, had been green-lit to begin film production after getting picked up by Orion Pictures. Her memoir began as an essay for The New Yorker but quickly evolved into a New York Times best-seller.
Fans knew that the upcoming film would be produced by Stacey Sher and Jason Kim. Sher has been a part of many legendary films such as Matilda and Erin Brockovich, whereas Kim had opportunities with Midnight Runners and The Divine Fury.
Zauner adds, “It is a surreal thrill to have the opportunity to memorialize my mother in the film. I consider it of the highest honor to pursue that task alongside creative luminaries such as Stacey Sher, Jason Kim, and Orion Pictures.”
It was important for the singer to find a director that understood her identity as a Korean-American. Zauner writes, “It was a daunting task, to find someone I could trust with the retelling of such a personal story. Someone who could honor my mother’s character and respect the darkest days of grief, and still make the coming of age of a half-Korean artsy outsider in a small Pacific Northwest hippie town seem real and cool.”
She continues, “In that spirit, I am so relieved to have found Will Sharpe and am beyond delighted that he will be the director of Crying in H Mart. I believe his sensitivity, as a director and an actor, and his own personal experience, having also grown up between two cultures, will be tremendous assets.”
Sharpe admired Zauner’s loving descriptions of food and familial love. He revealed, “There were lots of things that resonated with me as somebody who is half-Japanese, half-British, spent my childhood in Tokyo. Some of the descriptions of being jet-lagged in your family’s kitchen felt very familiar to me.”
