Gwyneth Paltrow recently spoke about her wellness routine and diet on Dr. Will Cole’s podcast, from which she received a lot of backlash, and was labeled the “mother of all almond moms.” A few days later, Paltrow then responded to the criticism on her Instagram Stories.

Gwyneth Paltrow discussed her “almond mom” diet and wellness routine on a recent episode of The Art of Being Well podcast. Social Media users didn’t take it quite well and promptly criticized the Goop founder for promoting what some call an “unhealthy” diet.

A lot of TikTok users referred to Paltrow as an “almond mom” for endorsing her habits under the guise of “wellness.” The label is slang for mothers who impose unhealthy eating habits on their children.

In addition to her regular detoxes, daily exercise, and sauna visits, Paltrow’s routine promotes outdated and discredited diets such as intermittent fasting and the paleo diet. During the interview, which was also recorded on video, Paltrow had an IV and expressed her fondness for it, stating that she is an “early adopter of IVs.”

According to Rhiannon Lambert, a registered nutritionist and author of The Science of Nutrition, Gwyneth Paltrow’s approach to wellness can be “very dangerous,” as she emphasizes techniques and methods that lack evidence-based support.

Paltrow responded to the criticism a few days after the infamous clip took the internet by storm. In a q+a session on her Instagram stories, Paltrow explains, “I think it’s important for everybody to know that I was doing a podcast with my doctor, so this is a person I’ve been working with for over two years now to deal with some chronic stuff.”

The Oscar-winning actress states “I have long COVID, and the way it manifests for me is very high levels of inflammation over time. So, I’ve been working with Dr. Cole to really focus on foods that aren’t inflammatory.”

Furthermore, Paltrow explained she reduced inflammation by adding numerous proteins, healthy carbs, and cooked veggies to her diet. She added, “this is based on my medical results and extensive testing that I’ve done over time.”

Paltrow claims that although she regularly follows her diet, there are days when she indulges in whatever she feels like eating. She concludes by stating that her appearance on the podcast was “a transparent look at a conversation between me and my doctor” not meant “to be advice for anybody else.”

Although Paltrow insists this was just a “transparent” conversation, the impact of her words should not be underestimated. As a public figure with a large following, her statements can have a significant influence on the behavior and attitudes of her listeners, especially young adults who are particularly vulnerable to unhealthy beauty standards promoted by social media. It’s time for Paltrow and other public figures to be more mindful of the impact of their words and actions and to use their platforms to promote positive change.
