Shawn Mendes and Tommy Hilfiger’s New Collection Is an Ode to the ’90s

Shawn Mendes and Tommy Hilfiger team up to launch a brand new capsule collection- Classics Reborn. The new 28-piece collection draws inspiration from the ’90s preppy style with a modern new twist: sustainability.

The Inspiration

The Classics Reborn Collection consists of 28, womenswear, and menswear items directly from the Hilfiger archives. Each piece is a tribute to the history of the clothing brand and the designer himself.

Since Hilfiger was one of the very first designers to pioneer the timeless style of polo shirts, varsity jackets, and oxfords it only makes sense that he reintroduces some of his very first iconic pieces with Shawn Mendes, an icon of the current generation.

The singer-songwriter has recently spoken about gradually making a shift to a more conscious lifestyle. In an interview with Elle Mendes also mentions how he’s happy to be a part of an opportunity that could make an impact on the fashion industry. He states, “It actually puts a lot of good pressure on other fashion brands and other industries to be like, ‘It’s time to start aiming towards shifting a paradigm.'”

Hilfiger also expresses his feelings about Mendes being a good fit for the brand. “I think girls like him. I think women like him. I think boys like him. Like, young people want to be like him,” he commented, “He just checks all the boxes. He’s definitely in the zeitgeist. We always work with the musicians of the moment, Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Shawn Mendes.”

The Collection

Mendes was particularly impressed by the use of Recycrom, a pigment powder derived from clothing and manufacturing waste, which was employed as a technique in the project. Additionally, the collection adopted circular practices by creating new fibers from recycled textiles rather than relying solely on virgin resources.

Moreover, the collection incorporates Circulose, a recycled textile waste-based fiber, and features pieces made from a blend of organic cotton and recycled materials. It also features a varsity jacket with sleeves crafted from Econyl, a regenerated nylon byproduct made from discarded plastic like fishing nets.
