It’s no surprise that House of the Dragon is officially renewed for season 2, given its record-breaking premiere in August 2022, with a total of 10 million viewers. The executive vice president of HBO programming, Francesca Orsi, stated, “We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with season 1. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season 2.”

Unlike Game of Thrones, this story has already been laid out, as Fire and Blood were already published before the series was made. However, fans are speculating that this would be the start of Dance of the Dragons, aka the war between Rhaenyra and Alicent. Rayn Condal, the showrunner, teased about war and an unexpected addition of humor. He also mentioned that “Series 2 will hit the rhythms people came to expect from the middle run of Game of Thrones, but it will have been earned and viewers will feel the tragedies because we put the work in.”

Season 2 will only air eight episodes instead of 10, and according to Deadline “It is part of a long-term plan for the show, which includes HBO mulling a green light for a third season.” Despite a shorter season being upsetting, Condal recently confirmed something that will keep fans on their toes for this upcoming season: the addition of five new dragons.

A Spanish news outlet, Hoy, reported that the series cast and crew will be filming in Cáceres, from March to June this year. According to Elle if you use season 1’s timeline as a reference, where filming began in April 2021 and premiered in August 2022, it seems we’ll possibly have to wait until 2024. The exact date is yet to be confirmed, but HBO Max Content CEO, Casey Bloys, thinks the summer of 2024 is “a good guess” for the series to air.

While the series is yet to be finished, fans can watch season 1 on HBO Max. To learn more about the Targaryen Civil War, visit Random House’s website to purchase Fire and Blood.
