Fans of the Cruel Intentions (1999) film have much to celebrate. Prime Video has ordered an eight-episode series based on the film.

Almost five years since NBC passed on the revival series, Amazon has swooped in to develop the project. Reportedly, the series will occur in Washington, D.C., and follow two ruthless step-siblings in college-Greek life. After a hazing incident has gone wrong and threatens their beloved college hierarchy, the two scheme and plot to preserve their power and reputation.

The original film’s producer, Neal H. Moritz, will return to executive produce the project. Phoebe Fisher and Sarah Goodman will write the script together. Fisher is known for her work on the hit HBO original series Euphoria (2019-present). Goodman is notable for her involvement in the original Gossip Girl series (2007-2012); ironically, the original Cruel Intentions film is regularly cited as a predecessor to the Gossip Girl series.

Many fans of the original film took to Twitter to celebrate the exciting news.

Based on the 18th-century novel Dangerous Liaisons, the original film adapted the characters and overarching plot for the ’90s. Rather than following the lives of French aristocrats, the film followed New York-rich kids in a private school setting. It cast teen idols Sarah Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair to round out its cast.

At the time of its release, the film was wildly popular-becoming a critical and commercial success. Since then, the film has become a cult classic.

There has been no news on whether any of the original cast members will return or if there will be new original characters. However, given the information we have now regarding the writers and plot, we are sure the series will be a hit. While we wait for more news to come out, fans can rewatch the original film’s trailer below for nostalgia’s sake. For more film and tv news, click here.
