Johnny Depp Tears Up As His New Movie Receives A Standing Ovation
Johnny Depp was observed becoming visibly teary-eyed when his latest film, Jeanne du Barry, received a standing ovation. The ovation lasted seven minutes at the 76th annual Cannes Film Festival.
“Getting ready for the world premiere of Jeanne du Barry, directed by + starring Maïwenn opposite Johnny Depp, which will open the 76th Festival de Cannes tonight,” Nikki Fowler, Editor-in-Chief of Glitter, tweeted from Cannes.

Jeanne du Barry stars Maïwenn, who portrays Jeanne Vaubernier, a working woman in 18th-century France. Maïwenn’s character defies societal expectations and ascends the social ladder to become King Louis XV’s mistress. However, her lower-class background sets her apart and subjects her to social exclusion within the king’s court.
Variety reported that Johnny Depp, portraying King Louis IV, “held back tears” as the crowd applauded his performance. He expressed his gratitude by waving to the audience and seemed pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming response.
“I’d just thank the people out there who have been with my up-and-down, weird-road, strange career and supported me and stuck with me all these years. I mean, they’re my boss. That’s what keeps me working.”

Cannes was a significant moment for Johnny Depp as he made a comeback after years of legal battles and a tumultuous divorce from his ex-wife Amber Heard. However, the past appeared insignificant as countless fans embraced him, giving him a reception befitting a genuine movie star.
Although Depp is seen tearing up while he holds his hands to his face before hugging the director, the cast and crew of the film did receive some backlash too. Maïwenn, the director of the film, made headlines regarding the assault of a journalist. Edwy Plenel, the editor-in-chief of Mediapart magazine, filed a complaint against Maïwenn, who admitted to spitting in his face during a restaurant meal.
Thierry Fremaux, the director of Cannes, also faced criticism for selecting Depp’s film as the festival’s opening feature, considering the recent allegations raised by Amber Heard during the defamation trial last year. In response to the criticism, he stated, “We only know one thing, it’s the justice system and I think he won the legal case.”
