The series explores the life of Indian-American teen Devi Vishwakumar as she navigates the ups and downs of relationships, friendships, and family. Although fans have eagerly anticipated the release of each season, the series is set to air its finale this year in its fourth season. Writer Mindy Kaling and Netflix both planned for the series to end with season four. Since the writers and Netflix anticipated the series ending, fans can expect a proper finale.

The fourth season will attend to all lingering storylines throughout the series. Kaling spoke to ET Online, stating that the series was always intended to be a “high school show.” With season four including the college application process for Devi and her friends, it “made sense” to end the series with the characters starting a new chapter of their lives after high school. Kaling and Lang Fisher, another of the series’ writers, announced plans to end the series with season four in May 2022.

Although fans are sad to see the series ending, it has left them with important themes surrounding self-acceptance, identity, and individuality. Kaling was able to draw on aspects from her own childhood to create characters that teens would be able to relate to easily. Specifically, Kaling hoped to reach Indian audiences by portraying small details from Indian culture that teens would be able to connect to their own lives.

With the series ending, fans can only hope for a future reboot or spin-off. Regardless, we expect fans will be able to find a little bit of Devi Vishwakumar in themselves even after the finale. Before season four, check out the first three seasons of Never Have I Ever, only on Netflix.
