NewJeans Sprinkles in Fun Summer Magic With ‘Super Shy’
To no surprise, NewJeans has again managed to lure us into a musical masterpiece with their most recent pre-release, “Super Shy.” Intended as a sneak peek for what their upcoming EP, Get Up, has to offer, “Super Shy” and its accompanying track “NewJeans” (an intro to the album), give us a hint of summer fun.
The girls’ theme represents Gen Z culture and all the quirky trends that come with it. Since their debut in July of 2022, NewJeans has shaken up the K-Pop industry by fundamentally changing the sound of girl group music. They entered the scene at a time when girl crush was dominating the charts. They introduced a spin on the dearly missed refreshing teen image.
Each of their songs has gained popularity on the web, particularly TikTok, with examples like “Attention” and “Hype Boy” becoming dance trends. At the same time, “OMG” and “Ditto” were utilized as editing audios. The versatility of their music allows the group to expand their fanbase with a combination of eccentric melodies, preppy beats, and melodic tunes everywhere you turn.
“Super Shy” has chosen another path—somewhat replicating the fast-paced backing beats nearly trademarked by PinkPantheress’ music. In addition to this release, the girls brought an intro to the upcoming album, “NewJeans,” flaunting the same name as the group. Many have noted its similarity to the PowerPuff Girls’ theme song. This assumption is not too far-fetched due to the track’s overall theme. Everything is embellished with nostalgic elements of this childhood cartoon.

From the album cover to the intricately animated music video, “NewJeans” is coded in all things PowerPuff, even recreating versions of themselves as these big-eyed, loveable characters. In fact, the girls revived the cartoon’s popularity. They sparked a viral TikTok trend that allows users to create their own PowerPuff lookalikes.
The show’s star, “Super Shy,” is a splendid summer treat, akin to being unable to expel an earworm. One listen hooks you in. Two listens are bound to make you completely enamored with the catchy lyrics and repetitive melody. Not only is the song a perfect reflection of this sunny season, but when compounded with an addictive choreography, it becomes a contender for song of the summer.
While many groups attempt to capture the public’s attention with refreshing, bright concepts to stream by the poolside, NewJeans has swept us off our feet on the first try. Both “Super Shy” and “NewJeans” reflect a recent change in pop music, motivated by the style that PinkPantheress has brought to the public eye— a series of fast beats alongside wistful vocals. In an attempt to ride this early wave, ADOR has taken it upon itself to propel a new sound into mainstream K-Pop. This innovation certainly leaves us in much anticipation for the future of Korean Pop music, especially since girl groups have been riding the wave of mass popularity, with artists like IVE and LE SSERAFIM rising to fame.
With the release of Get Up, NewJeans will continue to occupy their throne as one of the fastest-growing fourth-generation idol groups in the K-Pop industry. Each new release seems to unleash another side of the group we’ve yet to witness. Although it has been said time and time again, these five girls have taken the world by storm.
