Selena Gomez made her thoughts known about becoming a widespread meme at the VMAS. Needless to say, she wasn’t having it.
Selena Gomez wasn’t exactly thrilled about “becoming the meme queen” during the 2023 MTV VMA live broadcast on Tuesday night. While most of her Instagram posts revolve around her fashion moments, she shared her genuine feelings about becoming a humorous topic on the internet.
“I will never be a meme again. I’d rather sit still than be dragged for being myself. Much love,” she wrote on her Instagram story.

This isn’t the first time Gomez has voiced her opinion on the whirlwind of social media commentary. She’s previously spoken about wanting to take a break from social platforms and mentioned she’s “too old for this.” In February, Gomez revealed in an interview her complex relationship with social media and her decision to hand over her social media accounts to her assistant. “There’d be thousands of really nice comments, but my mind goes straight to the mean one,” she explained. Gomez emphasized that she and her team aim to share positive, uplifting content, and she tries her best to filter out the noise.
However, internet commentary is much more intricate than one can anticipate. Gomez undeniably became one of the biggest memes of the MTV VMA night. Her anxious reactions during different artists’ performances were notably highlighted. In addition, her evident emotional reaction when the controversial singer Chris Brown received an award nomination at the 2023 MTV VMAs also garnered significant attention and engagement.
