It’s not the first time in fashion history a designer has used famous artwork to inspire their collections. However, Jonathan Anderson and brand A.P.C. decided this time to build a fall collection stimulated by performance artist Joseph Beuys’ 1974 I Like America and America Likes Me. “In May 1974, Beuys embarked on a symbolic protest against the Vietnam War by flying from Dusseldorf to New York,” states Jennifer Braun from Fashion Network

Beuys’s artistic performance addressed American involvement in the Vietnam War and the social injustices toward minorities in America. Many elements used in Beuys’ art are incorporated in the collaboration. The collection includes duffle coats made to mimic the material of felt Beuys wrapped around himself to prevent all contact with America. “Bold graphic elements such as the ambulance and the gallery’s address (409 West Broadway) make appearances on vividly colored T-shirts and various pieces within the collection,” states Braun.

In the collection, Anderson regarded his personal style as well. The collection includes black leather biker jackets, black denim, multi-colored accessories, and utilitarian style totes in bold colors. All the pieces are a reflection of Anderson’s current personal style and his inspiration for many of his recent designs. “This project was about learning and the excitement of a new collaboration. It made sense where I’m at in terms of fashion. It felt natural,” states Anderson for Fashion Network.

Not only is the collaboration artistically immortalizing Beuys’ work, but it also includes textural technology A.P.C. was previously unfamiliar with. “The collection also introduces a stonewashed effect, achieved through laser technology without any chemical processes — a first for A.P.C,” shares Braun.

The full JW Anderson and A.P.C. collaboration collection will be available on both brands’ websites in the next couple of weeks. The collection’s gallery is available in Andrea Sacal’s article from Hypebeast. Jennifer Braun’s article from Fashion Network offers a complete perspective on the collection. Details on Joseph Beuys’s artwork are available in the Artland article
