As the season progresses, a significant shift in the creative sector of the fashion industry continues to take place. Chemena Kamali is no exception to the transitioning era of creative directors. Though the news of Kamali’s succession as the new creative director for Chloé is no surprise, it’s no less exciting for the fashion world.

The German-born designer began her career working under Phoebe Philo. “Kamali, a graduate of Central Saint Martins in London, has held stints at Alberta Ferretti and Strenesse in Milan and recently worked as a consultant for the LA-based denim brand Frame,” states Chloe Mac Donnell for The Guardian

With over twenty years of experience, Chemena Kamali cultivated a fashion career that has ultimately led her back to the French fashion house. “My heart has always been Chloé’s. It has been since I stepped through its doors more than 20 years ago. Returning feels natural and very personal,” shares Kamali in a statement.

Kamali’s appointment as the new creative director comes at a time when the Kering brand is experiencing criticism for its new leadership selections. “Kering, the parent company of McQueen, has six white, male creative directors. According to the Vogue Business Index, of the top 30 luxury brands, eight of the 33 creative director roles are held by women,” states Mac Donnell. Almost all new creative director positions within Kering have recently been appointed to males.

News of Kamali’s succession brings a refreshing vibe to the recent events regarding other newly appointed creative directors. However, Chloé has historically appointed females as its creative directors. Karl Lagerfeld is the only male to hold the position for the French brand.

Chemena Kamali’s time working with Phoebe Philo at Chloé prior to her new role will surely bring a modern, energetic twist to the feminine French fashion house. The fashion industry looks forward to what Kamali has in store for Chloé. More information on Chemena Kamali’s appointment is available here.
