Marks & Spencer Now Back on Top for UK Womenswear Sales
One of the UK’s biggest retailers, Marks & Spencer, is now back on top in womenswear sales.
Some time has passed since the name Marks & Spencer was uttered from one’s mouth. The last time any M&S clothing crossed paths with our line of sight was most likely when our grandmothers were pulling an old dress or coat from their closet. That is no longer the case for England’s well-loved womenswear label.
According to a recent press release from M&S, the brand’s campaign, Reshaping M&S, yielded successful results. The label’s recorded profit before tax was estimated at around 360.2 million GBP. Additionally, this coming January will be the first time shareholders receive a dividend check of almost 20 million GBP in nearly four years. In a market where virtually all other brands are experiencing a decline in sales, M&S Clothing and Home sales grew by almost 6%.
How did the UK retailer recover from its nearly silent presence in the fashion market? “Our vision for M&S is to be the UK’s most trusted retailer, doing the right thing for our customers, where products are at the heart of everything we do,” stated M&S CEO Stuart Machin. “To deliver this, in October last year, the new Executive team set out nine strategic priorities to reshape M&S for growth and value creation,” continued Machin. One of the nine priorities is to increase company sales by circulating more traffic to its online retail sector. To do so, M&S created an app. Its user-friendly and remarkably engaging mobile interface enticed consumers to spend more time browsing the retailer’s site.
Furthermore, M&S’s rebranding included revamping its clothing styles as well. Its wide-leg black leather trousers, sequin party dresses, and sophisticated wrap-top bodysuits are designed to fit comfortably in its well-tailored wool trousers. All new designs are created to parallel current fashion trends while still appealing to more mature consumers’ needs.
An excellently executed sales strategy from M&S brought the brand back to one of the top spots in the UK’s retail market. Furthermore, its reinvented online presence combined with its stunning quality and designs make its current success all the more justified. And with the holiday season right around the corner, there’s sure to be something special for friends and family.
