Taking the sewing needle into their own hands, the Frocktails are celebrating ten years of sewing and socializing.

What began as a casual dinner with 30 like-minded friends attending in their handmade attire is now a global association of sewing enthusiasts. The Frocktails originated in Melbourne, Australia, in 2013. As the group continued to grow and the venues expanded, the community decided to sell tickets to their events. The goal was to encourage anyone to join the Frocktail sisterhood.

Many attendees arrive in garments made by their hands with exciting fabrics and extraordinary individual designs. A relatively well-known Instagram sewing extraordinaire, Liesl, also known as Jorth Knits, arrived at the Melbourne Frocktails event in a bright red metallic two-piece set. The top was a beautifully sewn shimmering bralette paired with a matching skirt that fell just below her knees.

Another guest appeared in a lavish emerald green coat with the entire inner lining a vibrant gold fabric. Beneath the coat, she wore a high-waisted gold and blue skirt, a modest slit contouring the material in the front. The top is made of the same fabric as the skirt. However, it reveals the fabric’s more exotic underside, which consists of orange, gold, and pink patterned diamond shapes.

What exactly happens at a Frocktails event? Although, for some, the highlight may be solely experiencing the visually appealing eccentric designs. For others, it is also the social aspect of the event. One after the other, each guest mingles amongst groups of people infatuated with each other’s designs. A safe space for individuals with a common interest to compare, feel, and discuss the various elements that come with a hobby like sewing.

It doesn’t matter if you are short, tall, skinny, curvy, pink or green. Everyone of all shapes and sizes creates individual designs to accommodate and accentuate the natural beauty of their figures. Furthermore, the Frocktails have become a global community that encourages and accepts anyone hoping to learn more about sewing.
