It turns out there is no bad blood between the cast members; there was just a bit of confusion. McAdams explained to Variety that she had no idea her co-stars were going to be in the ad along with her.

“I didn’t know that everyone was doing it. I would, of course, always love to be part of a ‘Mean Girls’ reunion and hang with my plastics, but yeah, I found that out later,” she stated.

However, the initial thought of doing a commercial didn’t pique McAdam’s interest. “I don’t know; I guess I wasn’t that excited about doing a commercial if I’m being totally honest. A movie sounded awesome, but I’ve never done commercials, and it just didn’t feel like my bag,” she explained.

Even with appearances from Principal Duvall (Tim Meadows), and the creator of the film, the iconic Mrs. Norbury (Tina Fey), McAdamns will not participate. There was the consideration of McAdams being a part of the new film, but it just didn’t work out.

Despite her not being in the new film, McAdams is still supporting Fey. “Tina and I sort of dabbled with a few ideas, but it was tough to make it all work in the end,” she continued. “I was really down for whatever she wanted to do. I think the direction it went in will be fantastic and I cannot wait to see it.”

Mean Girls has become a pop culture icon and a cult classic. The film resonated with people of all ages, tackling bullying, body image, and backstabbing. Some quotes, such as “fetch,” “Get in loser, we’re going shopping,” and “on Wednesdays, we wear pink” have become iconic. In addition, the beloved film has a holiday: October 3. That was the day when Cady’s crush, Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett), asked what day it was.

The new Mean Girls hit theaters on January 12, 2024. In the meantime, fans can stream the original on Paramount+ and check out the commercial below.
