Robert Downey Jr. voiced his support for Margot Robbie and her performance in the critically acclaimed film Barbie.

The Academy recently received criticism for leaving Robbie and Greta Gerwig off the list for Best Actress and Best Director. While the reception to the criticism has been mixed, hardcore fans of the film questioned the logic of The Academy for leaving off two crucial components of Barbie, especially after being nominated for other awards like Best Picture.

In the SAG Awards nominee conversation, Downey Jr. expressed that Robbie’s performance “is not getting enough credit.” He pointed out the monologue by America Ferrara’s character Gloria, in which Barbie (Robbie) reacts to her speech. The conversation was with Willem Dafoe (Poor Things) and Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction). Joe McGovern for The Wrap moderated.

“America [Ferrera] has this amazing speech. And, by the way, she nails it. I’m watching it and going, ‘Wow, that was a really tough one. That’s like a one-act play. The whole movie hinges on it.’ But it’s the cuts away to Robbie so actively listening that I realize Greta is really on to something here. But it’s Robbie who had to trust,” explained Downey Jr.

Downey Jr. has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor and has a strong chance of winning his first Oscar for his performance in Oppenheimer. Barbie and Oppenheimer served as a pop culture phenomenon in 2023, with many fans labeling the craze “Barbenheimer.” The two films became the best thing possible for theaters.

Robbie may not have been nominated for Best Actress, but her performance is still receiving attention from fans during the award season.
