This January marked the commencement of the annual Sundance Film Festival, which featured some of Hollywood’s biggest up-and-coming stars. Among the list was a member of the former first family, which shocked the attendees.

Malia Obama will now be going by her stage name Malia Ann, in what “appears to be a deliberate move to carve out her identity separate from her prominent parents.” In light of the harsh criticism surrounding nepotism babies, or children with famous parents, Ann’s move is a wise decision to create her own path in Hollywood.

The short film is entitled The Heart, and is “an odd little story, somewhat of a fable, about a man grieving the death of his mother as she leaves him an unusual request in her will,” describes Obama. The project was developed and produced by star Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino. He appears to respect and admire the young director, stating, “I feel like she’s just somebody who’s gonna have really good things coming soon. Her writing style is great. We can’t be easy on her just because she’s the [former] president’s daughter.”

The film is not yet available to watch in theaters or on streaming platforms, so keep your eyes out for announcements about release dates soon. In the meantime, you can watch Obama talk about the film.
