New Seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender Are Coming
The Avatar Gang will return to Netflix, renewing the Avatar: The Last Airbender series. The streaming platform has officially confirmed seasons 2 and 3.
Netflix’s live-action adaptation follows Avatar Aang (Gordon Cormier) and his friends, Sokka (Ian Ousley) and Katara (Kiawentiio Tarbell). In the series, their world is split into four nations. These nations are the Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. Avatar Aang is a twelve-year-old Air Nomad who lost his home following the takeover of the Fire Nation. He must master all four elements: earth, water, fire, and air. His mission is to defeat the Fire Nation.
The series has been successful for Netflix upon its release. Between February 26 and March 3, it has garnered 19.9 million views. It currently holds the number 2 spot on the Netflix Top 10. Additionally, the drama is currently at 59% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite the renewal of the series, the adaptation has received mixed emotions. In a review by Variety, they explain, “Ultimately, Avatar: The Last Airbender feels like it’s putting on a show, instead of meticulously immersing the audience in this stunningly crafted world.” The adaptation has also faced criticism for how it is structured. The original Nickelodeon animation had 20 episodes in its first season, whereas Netflix condensed the story into 8 episodes. Many fans have criticized the series for leaving out crucial details and storylines.
Regardless of the criticism, Avatar: The Last Airbender has been met with some praise. Audiences applaud it for the sophisticated use of special effects. The creator, Albert Kim, has also been commended for the casting choices. The acting performances and the casting of Asian and Indigenous actors to portray the characters have garnered approval.
Furthermore, this announcement has excited many fans. People who have watched the original series are anticipating the introduction of the character Toph. The official X account for the series confirmed she will make an appearance. They tweeted, “Huge day for Toph fans,” in response to the renewal.
