Halle Bailey has finally shared the reasons why she decided to keep her pregnancy private in her acceptance speech, and we are here for it.

On Thursday, she attended the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards. During her emotional acceptance speech, she recounted how she brought her son Halo into the world and why she hid him from the limelight.

Bailey teared up telling the audience that “becoming a mom to my perfect little angel Halo” was the “biggest joy” of her life. The star then goes on to explain that her experiences have led her to “a place of protection.”

The Little Mermaid actress hid her pregnancy and later revealed it through an Instagram post. She shared an image of Halo’s tiny hand with a gold bracelet that had her son’s name across it.

“I’ve learned from that spotlight over the past eight years. I’ve also, if I’m being honest, been burned by it, too, as we all have.” She continues “It’s one of the biggest highlights of my life, and to be real, one of the biggest challenges, too.”

“There was no way in hell I was going to share the biggest joy of my world with anyone. Halo was my gift. He is the greatest blessing, and I had no obligation to expose him, me, or my family to that,” Bailey told the crowd.

The Color Purple actress then states “With the state of the world and the place it is in with men trying to force their will on our bodies, no one on social media, and for damn sure, no one on the planet, was going to tell me what to do with my body or what to share with the world.”

These words were important to hear, especially in a post-Roe v. Wade world. Her decision to keep quiet about her pregnancy was taken from “some of the strong women in my life.”

“Do y’all remember when Prince Z David Marley, who came from a queen named Lauryn Hill, entered the world? Do you remember how private Beyoncé was about her pregnancy? We have that right. Every woman in the world has that right to choose what to do with their bodies and what to share with anyone or everyone,” Baliey stated.

She was presented the award by her sister, Chloe Bailey, who also shares Halle’s unconditional love for baby Halo. You can watch Bailey’s acceptance speech below.
