After years of speculation, The beloved Pirates of The Caribbean franchise’s newest film is confirmed to reboot the franchise.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who helped produce all five previous Pirates films, confirmed the news. Considering the recent frustration with Hollywood, specifically Disney, for a lack of originality in their films, fans question if this is the right time to reboot the franchise.

The blockbusters were based on the “Pirates of The Caribbean” ride at Disney World, which initially raised eyebrows but eventually stole the hearts of many, mainly due to Johnny Depp’s classic performance as Jack Sparrow.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl released in 2003 and became an immediate sensation. After many sequels, with fans enjoying some of them, critics have concluded that each new installment has worsened consistently. The series officially hit a roadblock when Depp’s struggles with ex-wife Amber Heard became public. Disney reportedly cut ties with Depp due to circumstances of showing up drunk to the set of the last picture, Dead Man Tell No Tales, as well as the accusations brought against him at the time.

In his trial with Heard, Depp expressed his frustration with Disney and claimed he wouldn’t work with them again for even as much as “$300 million” after what he thought was a premature and unfair handling of the situation. According to People, Depp and Disney are open-minded about reuniting with a source close to the actor claiming “anything is possible.”

With many unsuccessful projects in theaters and on Disney+, the choice to reboot a beloved franchise, possibly without its iconic character is certainly risky. Margot Robbie was attached to a spin-off film for the franchise, but plans for that have gone away, as stated by the actress.

The newest film is expected to be a female-led Pirates story, but Depp has yet to be ruled out for a return as a side character. Despite being nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards in 2004, Depp portrayed more of a supporting role to Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley’s characters. It is also by far the most critically acclaimed of the franchise.

Depp returning to a supporting role could be best for the franchise, as the films where Sparrow was the lead character didn’t resonate with fans as much as the first. However, omitting him from the cast at this time, when he could still portray the character, could turn off multiple viewers and possibly lead to another financial disaster for Disney.

All Pirates of The Caribbean films are streaming on Disney+.
