Over the past few months, Disney has been getting fans excited for a sequel to their beloved adventure fantasy film, Moana. On social media, the studio released a short teaser on February 7 along with a few stills as a first look at the upcoming sequel. On May 29, Disney released the first official trailer for Moana 2, which will set sail to theaters on November 27.

The trailer opens with a hermit crab on a beach tapping a conch shell. Moana, voiced by Auli’i Cravalho, picks up the conch shell and blows it like a horn over ritualistic chanting. The next two shots are of Moana on a boat looking out onto the horizon and of her parents, along with all the people of the island of Motunui, applauding and bidding the island princess farewell.

After a shot of islanders banging on drums, viewers get a glimpse into the conflict of the upcoming film, as a sudden lightning strike hits an island hut, blasting Moana backward into the wall. The trailer then depicts Moana, accompanied by her pet rooster, Hei-Hei, banging on drums herself. After hearing her drumming echo, she hears the sound of someone else drumming back.

Over shots of Moana sailing the ocean and facing new challenges, Cravalho narrates: “This is a call from the ancestors to sail to new skies and reconnect our people across the entire ocean.” After the Moana 2 title card, the trailer ends with a clip of Maui flying onto Moana’s boat. Maui, voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, jokes around with Hei-Hei and Pua, Moana’s pet pig. “Bacon and eggs? Why didn’t you bring the pig last time?” he asks Moana.

This film, along with its trailer, has been highly anticipated by Disney fans. As such, the trailer received 178 million views within the first 24 hours of its release, making it Disney’s most-viewed animated trailer of all time. With just its trailer earning record-breaking achievements, it is clear that Moana 2 is bound to be a cinematic hit.
