Britney Spears’ New Biopic Is Now in the Works

A Britney Spears biopic based on the singer’s bestselling memoir is currently in the works at Universal Pictures.

On August 1, the princess of pop took to X to tell her fans about her mysterious new project. “Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt,” the “Baby One More Time” singer teased. “He’s always made my favorite movies…stay tuned.” Later that day, Universal Pictures revealed that the project the pop star has been working on alongside the La La Land producer is a biopic based on her heart-wrenching 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me.

According to The Ankler, an intensely competitive auction took place for the rights to Spears’ memoir. Producers like Margot Robbie, Shonda Rhimes, and Brad Pitt’s Plan B all fought to work with the “Toxic” singer on the project. Though the casting for the upcoming biopic has yet to be announced, Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu has been recruited to direct the exciting new film. This film will not be the director’s first time collaborating with Platt, as the two recently worked together on Wicked.

Spears’ The Woman in Me, which has sold over 2.5 million copies just in the United States, gives a tell-all account of the pop legend’s entire career. In her memoir, the “Gimme More” singer describes her rise to fame, confesses the truth about her relationship with Justin Timberlake and her secret abortion, and lays bare the details of her oppressive, infantilizing conservatorship under her father, Jamie Spears. Addressing iconic moments, infamous controversies, and the viral #FreeBrittney movement, the iconic artist uses her newfound freedom to get more vulnerable than ever before.

In a statement shared with People, the “Oops! I Did It Again” singer spoke on the New York Times bestselling memoir. She shared, “This book has been a labor of love and all the emotions that come with it. Reliving everything has been exciting, heart-wrenching, and emotional, to say the least.”
