The third installation of the musical-comedy, Mamma Mia!, is in the works, and fans are thrilled to dive back into a new, fun, romantic storyline.

In a recent interview with Deadline, the Mamma Mia! franchise creator and producer, Judy Craymer, announced that the third film of the trilogy is in the early stages of production. Sharing that she has several ideas up her sleeve, her biggest one yet is to bring Meryl Streep back on screen. Craymer stated, “I don’t want to over-egg it…but I know there’s a trilogy there…and I do think Meryl should come back, and if the script is right, she would, I think, because she really loved playing Donna.”

Moreover, Mamma Mia! actress, Christine Baranski, confirmed the third film is in the works to The Hollywood Reporter. The star revealed that she met with Craymer in London, who shared her new plans for the film. Baranski stated, “She gave me the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen. That’s all I can say! But, it’s not like, ‘Oh, I wish it could happen!’ Judy Kramer makes things happen. She made number two happen, and it was a phenomenal hit. I wouldn’t put it past Judy Kramer to get everybody back together.”

The idea of a third film has been in the air since the release of the sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, in 2018. The producer plans to think bigger for Sophie’s (Amanda Seyfried) next steps in life and what a sequel might entail to engage the audience.

In further news, Streep announced an “imminent” meeting that is in the process of proposing her return to the third Mamma Mia!. During the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, (via Deadline) she expressed, “Of course I want to do it. Sounds promising to us!”

Fans are overjoyed with excitement and filled with anticipation for seeing their favorite characters, portrayed by Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, Colin Firth, Julie Walters, and Baranski, return to the screens. Viewers hope Streep will reprise her role as Donna and are desperately waiting for more details to come.
