The Wild Robot exceeded expectations during its first opening weekend, earning Universal and Dreamworks their top spot at the weekend box office.

With an astounding $35 million in ticket sales on its opening weekend, the much-awaited film The Wild Robot made a big impression at the box office. The film, which is based on the best-selling book by Peter Brown, had an impressive debut, beating out Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis ($4 million) and Transformers One ($24.6 million). This impressive showing cements The Wild Robot’s status as a huge box-office blockbuster and places it as the third-biggest opening animation, falling behind Hotel Transylvania 2 and Hotel Transylvania

Making its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, the film received a perfect 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. After hitting theaters, it has held a staggering 98% rating. The film’s popularity and praise should come as no surprise to the entertainment industry, as the picture has been universally recognized for its ideal family-friendly nature.

The film tells the story of a robot named Roz who washes up on a secluded island and has to learn to survive in the wild. While stranded, Roz forms a parental relationship with an abandoned gosling and surprisingly makes friends with the animals on the island.

Bringing together both cinephiles and fans of the book, the film showcases a pattern of familial love. Indulging audiences in themes of acceptance, friendship, and the concept of what makes a family, viewers are sure to experience a full range of emotions. Touching on darker themes of death and survival, the film produces a storyline that reveals how love is what makes life worth living. Combining a blend of breathtaking visuals and animation, endearing storytelling, and a unique idea, audiences of all ages are flocking to the theaters to catch a glimpse.

From the creative mind of Chris Sanders, The Wild Robot is no stranger to his distinct process of storytelling. Famously known for his other works like Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Croods, Sanders has frequently tackled themes of family, belonging, and figuring out where one fits in a seemingly hostile world. His protagonists, often misunderstood individuals, embark on self-discovery adventures and develop close relationships with strange companions. Like many of his other works, this film focuses on the journey and how it changes a person, rather than the destination.

Despite a difficult year for film studios battling fluctuating release dates and competition with streaming services, The Wild Robot’s $35 million premiere has reassured that cinema culture is back. The recent picture has demonstrated that people are willing to visit theaters, particularly if they present something original and meaningful.

With its recent release, the bittersweet and message-induced film has been a great hit with viewers, demonstrating that even in a cutthroat industry, strong narratives and universal themes can lead to box office success.
