‘Dirty Dancing: The Musical’ in Preparation for 2025

A musical adaptation of Dirty Dancing is in production to hit the Broadway stage in 2025, thanks to Lionsgate and Eleanor Bergstein.

You read that right. Dirty Dancing has a high possibility of hitting the Broadway stage.

Dirty Dancing was released almost forty years ago, in 1987. The protagonists, Jennifer Grey, and Patrick Swayze, left moviegoers to this day stunned with the famed dance to the film’s theme song, “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes.

Audiences were also left obsessed with the film and its cast, with People magazine declaring Patrick Swayze as 1991’s “Sexiest Man Alive,” and the Dirty Dancing lift being used in other projects.

In 2020, it was announced that Dirty Dancing would have a sequel. A statement from Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer published by The Guardian stated: “It will be exactly the kind of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the company’s history.”

However, Dirty Dancing fans are still waiting for the sequel, even after the announcement was made four years ago. “I can’t tell you much about Dirty Dancing as I’m not going to make promises,” said Jennifer Grey to GamesRadar+ when asked about the sequel. “I’m just waiting for them to really nail it down as it has to be right. We can push that aside until we next time we speak when it hopefully will all be ironed out.”

The exciting news is that the musical adaptation is in the works, with the help of the original writer for the film, Eleanor Bergstein, the entertainment company Lionsgate, and The Path Entertainment Group. Lonny Price, who was part of the original cast, will also be involved as a director.

Bergstein released a statement stating, “In the years after I wrote and co-produced the original film Dirty Dancing, I was grateful and astonished by the generations of audiences who responded with open hearts to the themes of honor and courage beneath the surface. Years later, sensing our audiences wanted to ‘be there’ while the story was happening, I wrote and co-produced a stage show. Its reception all over the world exceeded my sweetest dreams. Now we’ve come full circle, and with my old friend Lonny Price by my side, I’m returning to the stage with a reimagined version. Its hope is to be equal to the new world swirling around us while revisiting more fully and precisely the story I’d wanted to tell when I wrote my first lines. It’s my way of saying thank you to you all.”

Dirty Dancing: The Musical is set to launch in 2025 and aims to spread the show internationally.
