Kerry Washington and Mariah Carey Encourage Voter Participation in New Video
Both Kerry Washington and Mariah Carey appeared in a new video posted on social media to promote voter participation in the upcoming presidential election.
On Monday, actress and activist Kerry Washington and five-time Grammy winner Mariah Carey shared a joint video on Instagram in honor of the approaching Election Day. Starting the video with the “Queen of Christmas,” the video displays Carey getting ready to sing the beginning of one of the best-selling Christmas singles, “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” when she’s suddenly interrupted by Washington.
“No, no, no, no, no, no. It’s not your season yet, Mariah,” exclaims the Scandal protagonist. “It’s voting season.” To emphasize the key steps in voting to viewers, she asks the singer if she is registered to vote and if she has a plan, which Carey proudly states she does and has “executed it.”
“Yessss, that’s amazing, because it’s my season before it’s her season,” exclaims the actress as she opens a hand fan with the word, “VOTER,” in the middle.
By the end of the video, Washington sings, “Now all we need is you,” and both artists harmonize to the opening note of the hit Christmas song. Washington has always emphasized the importance of voting, even airing a TV special, Every Vote Counts: A Celebration of Democracy, alongside Alicia Keys and America Ferrera.
“I am thrilled to be joining my dear friends Alicia Keys and America Ferrera to host ‘Every Vote Counts’ so that we can amplify voters’ voices and provide resources for all Americans as they participate in our democratic process,” stated Washington. “For our democracy to work, every American’s voice must be heard and every vote must be counted. We are so excited for this opportunity to celebrate democracy and our collective power when we all show up at the polls.”
Kerry Washington has endorsed Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz publicly. However, Mariah Carey has yet to make any official endorsements. In 2023, she visited the White House and met President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, leading many followers to believe she supports the Harris-Walz campaign.
