Saoirse Ronan Speaks Out, Giving Perspective On Girl World

Apple TV

Saoirse Ronan reminds men that women have more to worry about in reality; and yes, we can use the butt of a phone for defense.

This isn’t the first time women, especially actresses, have dealt with such comments from men. Women have had to confront awkward questions and situations in interviews, and in many of which, they often stay silent or are criticized for their responses. It’s not uncommon for women to shy away from defending themselves in fear of being seen as aggressive, rude, or unbelievable.

In 2024, many men are expected to take the hint, but women still face disrespectful comments from men. Actresses Anne Hathaway and Scarlett Johansson, like many others, have dealt with these men and have had to shut them down. In 2011, Hathaway was interviewed about her role as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, the discussion took a sharp turn when the interviewer asked, “How much weight have you lost to get into this shape?” Left completely baffled by the question, the actress responded “You did not just ask me that; what a forward young man you are.”

Unfortunately, women’s hardships have been and will continue to be overlooked, and Ronan’s most recent moment on The Graham Norton Show is a prime example. The moment developed when Paul Mescal and Eddie Redmayne spoke on self-defense techniques they learned for their films. As the conversation continued, Mescal stated, “Who’s going to think about, though, if someone attacks me?”

As the actor and audience began to laugh, the Lady Bird actress took the opportunity to share her own perspective on the situation. She reminds them, “Well, girls have to think about that all the time, am I right, ladies.” The media later applauded her response, as women worldwide admired her intelligent reaction. Notably, the quick and witty Jo March, who she had portrayed in Greta Gerwigs Little Women, still lives within her.
