The 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards nominations were announced on Monday, December 9. The ceremony will take place on January 5, 2025, at 8 p.m. ET, airing on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.

This year’s Golden Globe nominees brought a mix of surprises and snubs, sparking plenty of fan discussion.

One of the highlights of the nominations is the Broadway adaptation film Wicked, which earned four nods. These include Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), as well as acting nominations for Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (Galinda/Glinda). Erivo is in the running for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy, while Grande is nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

Released on November 22 Wicked grossed an impressive $114 million domestically during its opening weekend, setting the record for the highest debut by a musical adaptation. Despite its success in major categories like Best Picture and acting, the film was notably absent from the directing, writing, and musical score categories. Fans are hopeful that the sequel, Wicked: Part Two, scheduled for release in November 2025, will receive more recognition next year.

The Netflix film Emilia Perez, directed by Jacques Audiard, led the nominations with a staggering 10 nods. These include Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical), Best Director, Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez, Best Actress for Karla Sofia Gascón, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score, among others.

Other notable films with four or more nominations include Anora, Challengers, A Real Pain, and The Substance. Several actors have also made waves with multiple nominations, including Sebastian Stan, who is up for Best Actor in both Comedy/Musical (A Different Man) and Drama (The Apprentice).

However, the announcements didn’t come without their share of surprises and disappointments. Fans and critics were shocked by some notable snubs. For instance, Netflix’s The Perfect Couple, starring an all-star cast including Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber, failed to secure any nominations.

Similarly, Ryan Reynolds’ anti-hero comedy Deadpool 3 was left out of all comedy categories, much to fans’ dismay. The biggest shock, however, was the omission of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two from all categories. This was particularly surprising given the prequel, Dune: Part One, received multiple nominations last year.
