On January 22, award-winning indie rock musician Lucy Dacus took to X, formally Twitter, pledging to donate $10,000 to gender-affirming surgeries for the transgender community.

Dacus posted, “if trans people wanna comment surgery gofundmes, I’m gonna give away 10k in $500 increments until it’s gone, & if other people wanna scroll through and make donations, please do the government will never be the source of our validation or protection, we have to do it ourselves.”

Many have replied with GoFundMe’s for themselves and loved ones. Replies expressed gratitude to Dacus for her generosity. One user, @realf_inlegacy, replied, “Lucy I am CRYING you are an angel. I have felt so helpless in wanting to help but just don’t even know how and I literally am a lawyer who works in this realm and I feel so helpless. Thank you thank you thank you for helping those we love in any way you can.”

This comes in response to proposed and increased anti-trans policies and statements by recently elected President Donald Trump. AP News reported on his recent executive order to federally define sex and its impact on federal documents, such as passports, and health care.

However, the queer musician is no stranger to standing up for trans people. During her band’s Boygenius, performance at Coachella in 2023, the group took a moment to shed light on current events, and she stated, “I don’t know if you’ve been checking the news and seeing what’s been going on in Florida and Missouri and some of the other places, but trans lives matter, trans kids matter. We’re gonna fight it. We love you.”

Months later, Boygenius performed in drag at their show in Tennessee, referencing its recent anti-drag law. The band led a crowd chant against Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, chanting, “F**k Bill Lee!”

Them reports, “The musician also served as a producer, alongside her Boygenius bandmates Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker, on the debut record by trans singer-songwriter jasmine.4.t.”

The artist will perform with her and MUNA’s Katie Gavin as special guests on her “Forever is a Feeling Tour” starting this April.
