The Weeknd Drops Highly Anticipated Hurry Up Tomorrow Trailer
One week after releasing his final studio album under his stage name, “The Weeknd,” and following his surprise return to the Grammys stage, the superstar satiated fans with an electrifying first look at Hurry Up Tomorrow, the film adaptation of his final album.
He released the long-awaited Hurry Up Tomorrow trailer co-starring Wednesday and Beetlejuice 2 star Jenna Ortega alongside Saltburn’s Barry Keoghan. Official film stills were unveiled exclusively to Entertainment Weekly. The film, produced with Reza Fahim and Trey Edward Shults, is based on an original idea written by the artist.
While the official plot for the film is yet to be released, it is promoted as part of a larger effort to “kill” his alter ego. In an interview with W Magazine in 2023, he announced plans to retire his stage name. “It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”
Hurry Up Tomorrow is The Weeknd’s sixth and final album. Lana Del Rey, Playboi Carti, Anitta, Future, and Travis Scott lent their voices to the project. It is the third in a trilogy of albums, starting with 2020’s After Hours and 2022’s Dawn FM.
“Call me by the old, familiar name” is repeated in the trailer over the Brazilian funk inspired São Paulo, which features Anitta.
The Weeknd, born Abel Tesfaye, started releasing music anonymously in 2009. He developed a cult-like underground following in 2011 after releasing his mixtapes House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence.
After a string of high-profile collaborations with artists like Drake and Ariana Grande in the 2010s, he exploded into the mainstream with his second studio album, Beauty Behind the Madness. That album spawned two Billboard Hot 100 hit singles, “The Hills” and “Can’t Feel My Face,” and earned him a Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album in 2016.
So happy that Abel is able to make amends with The Recording Academy! So excited for The Weeknd to make his feature film debut as an actor with Hurry Up Tomorrow from Lionsgate this May based on his brand new album! His third album, Starboy, featured Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey, and Daft Punk, cemented his status as a global superstar. In 2016, he was featured on Beyoncé’s critically acclaimed and commercially successful Lemonade album.
This is not The Weeknd’s first venture into film. In 2019, he appeared in the critically acclaimed crime film Uncut Gems, starring Adam Sandler and directed by Benny and Josh Safdie.
Last year, The Weeknd starred opposite Lily-Rose Depp as Tedros in the HBO miniseries The Idol. The project, directed by Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson, generated controversy for its portrayal of women and behind-the-scenes drama. The Weeknd defended the series amid the buzz, stating that the intent was to make “a dark twisted fantasy” of the music industry as he knows it.
The Weeknd’s final album is available now. Hurry Up Tomorrow releases in theaters on May 16.
