Two musical icons, Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande, discuss all things Wicked at the Director’s Guild of America’s theater. The “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” singer was invited to interview the actress for an audience of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members.

First-time Oscar-nominated actress Grande started the interview by admitting, “My team was like, ‘Who would be a cool person to do this? Who’s your dream person?’ And I was like, ‘Billie, [but] she’s not going to say yes.’ She’s too busy. She’s too fabulous. It’s too much. But she said, ‘Yes!’ and I was like, ‘Oh s***. Now I’m so nervous.”

Eilish reciprocated the admiration to her interviewee by confessing, “I love this girl so much and I love this movie so much, and I love you. And I still use the YouTube channel that… has been my personal channel since I was about 11. I was just in the car telling my mom that you can find old interviews of you from like 2014 with Billie Eilish comments like, ‘I’m Team Ari.’ I didn’t realize that they were still up, but there’s many things where I commented like, ‘God, I just love Ariana so much.’ And I used to call you ‘Ari’ to my brother [Finneas], and he’d be like, ‘Don’t call her Ari, you don’t know her!’”

The two singer-songwriters move on to talking about the film and, more specifically, Grande’s preparation for the role of Glinda.

Eilish reveals, “I know you did a lot of training for this, like vocally, I mean I’m sure in every way, but… I’ve always thought of you as, I’m sure everyone agrees, one of the greatest singers of our generation.” When Grande tried to reciprocate the compliment, Eilish interrupted, “This is not about me, ma’am.”

After discussing the film some more, the HIT ME HARD AND SOFT singer noted they only had time for a few more “songs.”

Quickly correcting her mistake of uttering “songs” instead of “questions,” she apologized, “I’m on tour you guys, I’m used to saying that. Sorry.” She moved on, but the actress interjected, “We do need to do that, though, at some point,” referring to the two of them singing together.

Eilish agreed, “I would love that,” when an audience member chimed in, “Do it now!” She joked, “Ok, sing!” directed towards Grande, and the room filled with laughter.

What started as a Wicked Q&A turned into potential plans for a Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande collaboration. While the two were joking about singing a duet, you’ve got to admit, that would be iconic.
