Four months after the passing of One Direction member, Liam Payne, his ex-fiancée Maya Henry has come out with shocking new details about their whirlwind relationship.

“This was someone I loved very much,” Henry, 25, revealed in a written statement to Rolling Stone on Tuesday, February 11, reflecting on their ups and downs. “Initially, it was the drug use and addictions that tore us apart. Anyone who has been with an addict understands how difficult that is. While I loved him deeply, he did things that hurt me in ways I’ll never fully understand, and he continued to hurt me years after we broke up.”

Several insiders told the magazine that Payne, who passed away at 31 in October 2024, privately “faced challenges with his sexuality.” The former One Direction member experienced sexual attraction to men while he was in an on-and-off relationship with Henry from 2018 to 2019.

“I put myself in situations that were unsafe and harmful,” she claimed. “I knew there were parts of himself he was struggling with — parts of his identity he wasn’t ready to fully face, even within our relationship.”

Henry continued: “In the end, it wasn’t just the betrayals or the addictions that broke us — it was the realization that I had spent years in something that was never what I thought it was. I don’t fault him for his struggles. I stood by him in his darkest moments, through the chaos, through the pain, through things that broke me in ways I can’t explain. And yet, when it was all over, I was left with nothing but emptiness.”

A source told Rolling Stone that the late singer, 31, gave the 25-year-old author an ultimatum upon learning of the pregnancy. “Liam sent Maya a long message saying it was either get an abortion and stay with him, or raise the child alone, and he would not acknowledge either of them,” the source revealed to the outlet.

“This came as a shock to Maya, as Liam had expressed a desire to start a family, and they had been trying for a child,” the source added.

At the time, the former model told People that her life experience closely mirrored that of her character, Mallory, from her book, Looking Forward, where her character is advised by her partner’s team to avoid seeking treatment for hemorrhaging in the hospital due to concerns about being seen in public and the potential for gossip.

Looking back on her abortion, Henry believed everything happens for a reason. “If it were up to me, I wouldn’t have done it,” she stated. “But then also, if I were to have made a different decision, then I would’ve lost the person that I loved. There were definitely difficult conversations about it. But looking back now, things happen for a reason.”
