Clark Gregg Revealed He Had One Great Regret During His Time With Marvel
Clark Gregg had ‘one great regret’ while portraying Special Agent Phil Coulson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The 62-year-old actor explained during an exclusive interview at the Zero Day series premiere with People that regret— was not getting to work alongside Angela Bassett. Gregg claimed he “spoke to her once” when they were on set for their new Netflix series. “And I said, ‘You know, my one great regret within the Marvel Universe was that Agent Phil Coulson was no longer technically alive when Wakanda showed up.”
Gregg’s claim refers to his character’s death in The Avengers (2012). Bassett’s character, Queen Ramonda of the Wakandan royal family, did not debut until the Black Panther (2018) film. Bassett portrayed the character two more times in Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), the latter of which earned her an Oscar nomination for her performance.
Greg’s character appeared in numerous projects, such as Iron Man (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011), and Captain Marvel (2019). After his presumed death, his character was resurrected in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series (2013–2020).
Ultimately, due to timing, the two characters never crossed paths throughout their respective projects. Greg claimed that he had attended the Black Panther premiere, which he described as one of the best film premieres.
The Zero Day series, in which both actors star, follows former United States President George Mulle, portrayed by Robert De Niro. Gregg portrays billionaire Robert Lyndon, a crucial figure in the series. Meanwhile, Bassett stars as President Evelyn Mitchell alongside a star-studded cast including Jesse Plemons, Lizzy Caplan, Connie Britton, Joan Allen, and Matthew Modine.

Greg recalled being amazed by all the other actors on set.
“My scenes are very specifically with one character I will not name,” he explained. “But I mean, there isn’t an actor in that cast I wasn’t stunned to get to work with. Joan Allen is one of my heroes. Of course, Robert De Niro. I got to work a little bit with Jesse Plemons, who I’m a huge fan of. Everyone in this cast is a major leader,” Gregg concluded.
