Hip-hop star Doechii had the opportunity of a lifetime when she joined her musical idol, Lauryn Hill, on stage for a performance at Miami’s Jazz in the Gardens festival to perform Hill’s 1998 classic, “Doo Wop (That Thing).”

Before welcoming Doechii to the stage, Hill introduced her with warmth and admiration. “I want to introduce y’all to another sister,” she told the crowd. Video footage captured by radio station 103.5 The Beat, showcased the energy and chemistry between the two.

The following day, Doechii shared a tribute to Hill on Instagram. “The first full-length album I ever listened to was The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill“. “My mom would play it from top to bottom every day on my way to school for years,” Doechii stated.

She went on to reflect the impact of Hill’s lyrics, citing a line from “Doo Wop (That Thing)” that has guided her through life’s challenges. “Don’t be a hard rock when you really are a gem.” “I carried your principles with me during my coming of age. And I carry them with me now,” she added.

Doechii also shared photos from the night, including her striking look—a Canadian tuxedo paired with a newsboy cap and string bikini top, as well as snapshots of her iconic duet with Hill.

The performance captured a monumental moment for Doechii. Just last month, she took home her first Grammy for Best Rap Album for Alligator Bites Never Heal, making history as only the third woman to win in the category, following Hill and Cardi B. In her acceptance speech, she expressed gratitude, crediting her success to perseverance, sobriety, and faith.

“I put my heart and my soul into this mixtape. I bared my life. I went through so much. I dedicated myself to sobriety, and God told me I would be rewarded,” she stated.

She also used the moment to shine a light on her hometown of Tampa, urging record labels to recognize the city’s rich musical culture. With her undeniable talent and a co-sign from one of hip-hop’s greatest, Doechii continues to rise. Proving that she is a force to be reckoned with in the industry.
