The 55-year-old hosted the beloved comedy sketch series for the first time in 20 years alongside legendary artists and musical guests Elton John and Brandi Carlile. During his opening monologue, Black reflected on how long it’s been since he last hosted the series before explaining that the pressure forced him to consider quitting.

“I can’t do it; it’s too stressful, and frankly, I do not have the nerve,” the actor stated before a guitar riff could be heard in the background. After being given a microphone, he explained that the music gave him “the power to host again” before somersaulting.

“I’m back,” he shouted before nodding to various projects he worked on over the past two decades. As he made his way through the New York City soundstage audience, the Dear Santa actor was joined by a marching band and later gave props to former and current Saturday Night Live cast members.

Throughout the night, he starred in various sketches, including one where he portrayed a man attending the first play in Ancient Greece, along with another where he portrayed a suitor dressed as Indiana Jones on a dating series.

Another comedic moment from the new episode saw him in a commercial advertising a medication to help provide relief after eating Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Later in the episode, the first musical performance began with John and Carlile performing “Little Richard’s Bible” from their new album, Who Believes in Angels?
