Tina Knowles on Her New Memoir
Tina Knowles has been hiding behind the spotlight, shaping icons like Beyoncé and Solange. Now, she’s stepping forward with her truth in Matriarch: A Memoir.
At the age of seventy-one, Tina remains vibrant. “It came at a time that I was open to writing my history down,” she stated, reflecting on the deep and personal decision to share her story. Known by many as Tenie, Miss Tina, and Mama, she carries multiple identities that are grounded in perseverance. Even after a breast cancer diagnosis last year, she refuses to slow down.

In Matriarch, she traces her background from Louisiana to Galveston, where she grew up in a rich Black history that’s often overlooked. “Galveston was unique and ahead of its time compared to other cities,” she mentioned, praising Central High School and uncovering stories of Black Wall Street and deep-rooted community pride.
The memoir also captures both pain and joy. From her early days building a career in Houston to personal memories with her beloved nephew Johnny, Tina’s life has always been about turning adversity into beauty. Johnny’s philosophies, like “don’t sleepwalk through life,” remain with her. “He taught me to laugh, to live out loud, and to not take life so seriously,” she stated.
Tina reflects on her daughters’ early careers, the music industry’s exploitation of Black artists, and how the new generation is changing the rules. She’s proud of how Beyoncé, Solange, and even her granddaughter, Blue. As they turn pain into art, a family trait passed down from generations of women who turned hardship into creativity.
While her daughters remain protective, especially about her social media presence, Tina remains present. “Instagram is fun for me,” she stated.
