The executive action occurs a day after the 44th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

President Donald Trump signed into effect the deemed “Mexico City Policy,” which bans the US government from funding non-governmental international agencies that provide or promote abortion services, on Monday. According to CNN, while it was illegal to directly fund abortion services for NGOs even in Barack Obama’s years in office, the US was then still able to provide care post-abortion and access to contraceptives. With Trump’s current executive action, organizations that offer abortions along with other family panning services will no longer have funding from the US Agency for International Development.

Former president Ronald Reagan first put this historically Republican policy into action during his term, and it has been put in and out of power with different administrations throughout the years.
