Podcast Interviewer Grossly Insults Roxane Gay
A recent women’s lifestyle website has been under fire due to cruel comments made by the website’s director, Mia Freedman, towards critically acclaimed essayist and critic Roxane Gay. Gay’s book Bad Feminist has been lauded around the literary world for its refreshing honesty on gender and social politics. Freedman invited Gay as a guest on her podcast to talk about her new book Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body, but the podcast description included some hateful comments about Gay’s weight.
Freedman wrote, “When you’re overweight, your body becomes a matter of public record in many respects. Your body is constantly and prominently on display.”
In another post, Freedman discussed how Gay’s requirements to come in for an interview were different than her other guests.
“Roxane Gay is…I’m searching for the right word to use here. I don’t want to say fat so I’m going to use the official medical term: super morbidly obese.”
Read the rest of this post, as some of Freedman’s words are horrifying.
According to The Washington Post, Gay responded back on Twitter, simply writing that the “situation was disgusting and shameful and frankly that it spoke for itself.”
Although Freedman issued a formal apology, the damage has already been done.
