The famous reggaeton song turns thirteen-years-old this year.

Daddy Yankee’s hit, featuring Glory, came out in 2004 and soon found it’s way to Billboard’s Top Latin Albums’ Chart as No. 1. Since it’s release, “Gasolina” was the first reggaeton song to be nominated for the Latin Grammy Award for Record of the Year.

In 2015, the track No. 9 on the “50 Greatest Latin Songs of All Time” list for Billboard. In 2017, it was included on Billboard’s “12 Best Dancehall & Reggaeton Choruses of the 21st Century” where it was No. 8. IT’s also become one of the songs associated with opening the door for reggaeton and making a path for other reggaeton stars.

While many of us don’t know what the song means, we all recognize the chorus which is “a ella le gusta la gasolina, dame más gasolina, como le encanta la gasolina, dame más gasolina.” When translated, the lyrics mean “she likes gasoline, give me more gasoline, how she loves the gasoline, give me more gasoline.”

When asked about what the song was about during an interview with Billboard, Yankee replied “The verse was so simple and easy to remember. The word gasolina — everyone in the world knew what it meant. And I think part of the success of the track was people looking for some hidden meaning: Was I talking about alcohol, about drugs? That track is completely literal. It’s one of the most innocent songs I’ve ever written.”
