Serena Stuns on the Cover of ‘Essence’ Magazine—and Her Professional Background Is Equally Stunning

Serena Williams recently interviewed and modeled for Essence Magazine’s September cover, and her background may surprise you. Everyone knows she’s one of the best tennis players in the world, but Serena also has an extensive background in fashion. She is living proof that a woman can have multiple passions and professions—a concept that often gets overlooked in the world. Serena opened up about being a new mother, what it’s like being a leading entrepreneur in the fashion industry, and what freedom means to her. Serena’s definition of freedom is the epitome of feminism and empowerment today. She described it as:

“…not being afraid to say, ‘I’m here’ or ‘Hear my voice’ or ‘This isn’t what I agreed to’ or ‘This isn’t fair and that isn’t right.’ That’s freedom for me. I’ve done it my whole career. It’s knowing where I’ve come from, knowing my history. In particular, the sport that I’m in… It’s about speaking up and just saying, ‘You know what? You belong here, too.’”

Her Essence photos are absolutely gorgeous. And in case you’re wondering—she went to fashion school and has about twenty years of knowledge about the industry.

If you aren’t familiar with her fashion line, Serena (also popularized with the hashtag #BeSeenBeHeard), you should look it up (HERE). Serena’s mission is to remind us that:

“Every woman’s success should be an inspiration to another. We’re strongest when we cheer each other on. I dedicate this collection to everyone who’s ready to rep their S. Together, we got this.”
