Margot Robbie is adding to her eclectic list of movie roles following the announcement she’ll be helming a new Pirates of the Caribbean film.

Robbie made waves when she ditched the Joker and spearheaded the Harley Quinn film, Birds of Prey, which was released in February of this year. Now, she’s set to prove she can helm a whole crew in a new female-powered Pirates of the Caribbean film.

The project has been kept fairly under wraps, with no title or specific release date yet known. What has been said is the upcoming film will stand alone from previous swashbuckling adventures, which starred Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom. Instead, it will follow a fresh central story and new characters. While the news of Johnny Depp’s departure has been met with mixed reactions, there’s still a definite buzz of excitement surrounding Robbie’s casting.

Christina Hodson, who directed Birds of Prey will also pen the script for Margot’s latest project, marking a reunion for the director and actress who have emerged as Hollywood’s next dynamic duo. In 2019, they launched an initiative called the Lucky Exports Pitch Program, “aimed at getting more female-identifying writers hired by studios to write action-centric movies.”

The first Pirates of the Caribbean film was released in 2003 and it seems the world’s pirate love affair isn’t slowing down any time soon, with a new feature project currently in the works at Disney. Keep your eyes peeled some female buccaneers making their presence known onshore and on-screen!
