The 2020 VMA nominations have arrived, and we are excited to see so many fierce female artists leading the pack.

Amidst a global pandemic, poisonous politics, and an arduous effort to create accountability and ameliorate antiquated, problematic processes, there is finally some rare, uplifting news. On Thursday, July 30, MTV announced the nominations for the upcoming 2020 Video Music Awards.

The iconic high-ponytail-wearing Arianna Grande and the queen of eccentric ensembles, Lady Gaga have both received an impressive nine nominations. The pair’s lengthy list of nominations notably includes a co-nomination for video of the year for “Rain on Me.” The chart-topping teenage artist Billie Eilish and The Weeknd follow with six nominations each.

Effective yesterday, fans can vote for their favorite artists across various gender-neutral categories (15 categories total). Fans are eligible and encouraged to vote up to 20 times per category. Voting will remain open through Wednesday, August 23, and this year’s much-anticipated awards show is scheduled to air on Sunday, August 30 at 8:00 PM ET/PT.

Due to the current state of the world, this year’s VMAs will look different from all its predecessors. This year’s awards show will incorporate new coronavirus-inspired categories, including “Best Music Video From Home” and “Best Quarantine Performance.” We eagerly await this year’s event and cannot wait to see who snatches up all of the awards this year.
