‘The Broken Hearts Gallery’ Is the Film We Need Right Now

“Art reflects life as life reflects art” is a saying that seems to be taken quite literally in the film The Broken Hearts Gallery.

To the younger Millennials and older Gen Z’ers, this is the rom-com for you. We all need to thank Natalie Krinsky, who is making her debut as a writer and director, for waiting ten years to get to this film released as well as Selena Gomez for executive producing it.

The Broken Hearts Gallery will be the 2020 film we need to fill a void of representation in the rom-com genre. Not only is her film full of diverse talents in ethnicity and body shape, but it is also diverse in the traits of her characters she brings to screen. For once we see a young woman who is weird and quirky, not to take away from her attractiveness, but as the essence of her character—something most, if not all women can relate to.

Geraldine Viswanathan takes the titular role of Lucy, a New York twenty-something who has a fascination with holding onto memories of her past relationships in the form of physical objects. She lives surrounded by these mementos with her roommates Nadine and Amanda played by Molly Gordon and Philippa Soo, respectively.

Her male opposite is Nick, played by Dacre Montgomery, who at first seems like an annoyance in Lucy’s life, quickly turns into a friend that needs Lucy’s help. In order to release her heartbroken past, Nick encourages her to turn her mementos into art which inspires others to do the same.

Timing is everything and the cast believes the timing is perfect for this film’s release. Viswanathan comments, “I think we just need to feel good and this is such a feel-good movie.”

While each of us can relate to our own struggles of letting go of the past, The Broken Hearts Gallery hopes to remind us of the joys of friendship in the present and the optimism of love in the future with many laugh-out-loud jokes along the way. The movie is out now and you can view it either online/on streaming platforms or in select theaters.
