Lady Gaga Releases Music Video for ‘911’

Wow.

It’s hard to describe the fashion-focused, mini-film that is Lady Gaga’s newest music video. With the custom clothing commissioned by Gaga’s fashion director Nicola Formichetti and stylist Marta del Rio and nods to classics like Alejandro Jodorowsky’s “The Holy Mountain,” Federico Fellini’s “8 1/2,” and Sergei Parajanov’s “The Color of Pomegranates,” the song from her sixth album, Chromatica, truly comes to life. Directed by “The Fall” and “The Cell” filmmaker Tarsem Singh, the video is an ode to the 34-year-old singer’s experiences with antipsychotic medication.

“This short film is very personal to me, my experience with mental health and the way reality and dreams can interconnect to form heroes within us and all around us,” she wrote before thanking Singh, her team, and legions of supportive fans for bringing the concept to life. “It’s been years since I felt so alive in my creativity to make together what we did with “911,” she said. “Something that was once my real-life every day is now a film, a true story that is now the past and not the present. It’s the poetry of pain.”

This short film is very personal to me, my experience with mental health and the way reality and dreams can interconnect to form heroes within us and all around us. I’d like to thank my director/filmmaker Tarsem for sharing a 25 year old idea he had with me because my life story spoke so much to him. I’d like to thank Haus of Gaga for being strong for me when I wasn’t, and the crew for making this short film safely during this pandemic without anyone getting sick. It’s been years since I felt so alive in my creativity to make together what we did with “911”. Thank you @Bloodpop for taking a leap of faith with me to produce a record that hides in nothing but the truth. Finally, thank you little monsters. I’m awake now, I can see you, I can feel you, thank you for believing in me when I was very afraid. Something that was once my real life everyday is now a film, a true story that is now the past and not the present. It’s the poetry of pain.

Some other looks the superstar wears during the video include a slinky, asymmetrical, ombré dress, and cape (Johannes Warne). The crimson mesh mask in the pictures that trended all over the Internet yesterday along with the news of the video’s release is from Dead Lotus Couture, and the finale elegant draped yellow dress is from Warne’s graduate collection. Throughout the video, she is seen with bright blue hair and matching eye shadow.

Costume designer Garo Sparro created custom looks for several of the background performers. Each of the tangerine and yellow versions of religious garments, high-collared gowns detailed with embroidery, and towering headpieces would have been impressive on its own but combined, they fill the video with a spectacular chorus of oddities and brilliance.

Little Monsters around the world are rejoicing at the music video’s combination of a deep message and what can only be described as an adjective called “Gaga.” Lady Gaga has been a champion for mental health throughout her career, and we not only thank her for her work but avidly await the next masterpiece she creates.
