Melissa Benoist is officially hanging up her Supergirl cape.

The CW show Supergirl will conclude with its sixth and final season. It was a collective decision between The CW, Warner Bros. Television, and Berlanti Productions. While it is unclear whether the show is being canceled or if the actors decided season six would be the end, the last 20 episodes are already being planned and scripted.

“To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement,” Benoist shared on Instagram after the news was brought to the public. “Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless. She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful.”

The news of Supergirl’s curtain call comes almost four months after the season five finale. The series debuted in 2015 on CBS but switched over to The CW for season two and onward.

Originally, Supergirl wasn’t apart of the Arrowverse, but that quickly changed when The Flash‘s Grant Gustin did a cross over episode towards the end of season one. With this news, the show is the second Arrowverse series to come to an end. Arrow, which started in 2012, ended in January this year after eight seasons.

Fans of the show are sad to see Kara Danvers go. Benoist has touched so many lives, while also empowering those who found comfort in her character. She will always be Supergirl in the hearts of her fans.

However, this is not the last goodbye to the residents of Krypton. The CW is already in the process of creating a new series starring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch as Superman and Lois.

Benoist brought Kara Danvers to life and we are so grateful for all she brought to the show and character. Make sure you don’t miss Supergirl’s final season, which is set to air in 2021.
