J Balvin and Camila Cabello learned they have more in common than just singing.

J Balvin was included in TIME’s 200 Most Influential People of 2020. This year included personalized tributes for each honoree that expressed how they have impacted others. Cabello wrote a message for Balvin revealing their cultural ties and situations that they face.

Cabello wrote, “When I first met J Balvin—or José, as his family and friends know him—my family and I were already huge fans of his. We would play ‘Ginza’ and ‘Ay Vamos’ at all our family parties. He was already making the people all over the world dance. When I found out I was on a song with him—’Hey Ma,’ my first song as a solo artist—I was so excited, but you’re always nervous to meet your idols.”

Cabello also mentioned how she no longer felt as alone when she saw Balvin’s post on Instagram for mental illness.

“I remember bursting out crying because I no longer felt alone, amazed that someone who was achieving such incredible things was still vulnerable and brave enough to share that with the world,” the singer wrote. “If there’s one thing I would love everybody to know about him, it’s this: José has always been so humble, hardworking and gracious, and so constantly grateful and kind.”

Cabello also thanked Balvin for opening the doors for Latino artists everywhere. With his 42 billion streams on songs, Balvin is “making the world hear and fall in love with our culture, our sounds and our spirit,” former Fifth Harmony member said.

Cabello recently wrote an essay for WSJ. Magazine in February discussing her fight against having an obsessive-compulsive disorder. She then urged those who are struggling with similar mental health issues to speak up and not let society’s view affect their self-image.

If you or one you know struggle with mental health, do not be afraid to discuss or reach out for help.
